Direct Object and Indirect Object



Direct Object and Indirect Object

Sometimes, a sentence has two objects, direct and indirect object.

DIRECT OBJECT
Direct Object is usually the name of some thing.

Example:

  • He told me a secret.
(here the secret is direct object)


  • The teacher taught English.
(here the English is direct object)


INDIRECT OBJECT
An indirect object is usually name of a person to whom something is given:

Example:

  • Grandmother told children a story.

  ( here children is  an indirect object)



  • The professor gave students the books

(here the students is an indirect object)



There are two objects in each of the following sentences:
·         Object 1 = indirect object → all the children.

·         Object 2 = direct object → an ice cream.
